The Future is Near. Charles Kettering, one of America’s greatest inventors, once said, “We should all be concerned about the future because we will have to spend the rest of our lives there.” Those of us who have spent our lives in the real estate industry are keenly aware that our industry is constantly evolving and facing new challenges. How we address those challenges today affects the way we’ll do business tomorrow. Issues define our industry and help bind us as a REALTOR® family. There are many issues that present challenges and opportunities today:
We must also keep our eyes on state and regional issues, where NAR should be a partner to help resolve or fight on behalf of our members. Our future will be shaped by our voices in Washington. We are now 1.1 million members strong; however, we rank number 12 in influence on Capital Hill. To increase our influence, we need to motivate our grassroots and encourage members to participate in our Action Center. The power of sending an email or letter regarding an issue cannot be overstated. Our successes in our REALTOR® Political Action Committee and our grassroots involvement will make us Number One. We must strive to make a difference in the lives of our members today and for the future. We need to continually seek information to direct the kinds of changes that will help make our members more professional and more successful in meeting their bottom line. Ensuring that they remain the first point of contact with consumers is key to their success. The choices we make today will determine our future and the future of this industry. The good news is that we have a tremendous opportunity to improve our industry and our lives. To do this, we must work together, and each of us must be actively involved in our industry and committed to our high standards of ethics and professionalism. It has been an honor to work with so many leaders from across the country that care passionately about NAR and our industry. I am prepared to dedicate myself to serve you, our members, as the 2008 First Vice President. Let us go forward to meet the future and not wait for it to come to us. If you believe as I do that the future is nearer than we think, please contact me with your ideas or invite me to visit with your State or Regional members.
